DARK FOREST & WATERDROPDIGITAL ART EXHIBITION Guide

As Liu Cixin, the author of "The Three Body Problem", said, "in the hands of visual artists, science fiction will show its greatest charm."

In MarrowDAO, there are many members who like science fiction meet here, many of them because they are loyal readers of science fiction writer Liu Cixin, and later joined our incubated Guild W as players of the on-chain game Dark Forest.

Together with Sougen and HAWK AND RAVEN Studio, we organized this digital art exhibition titled "Dark Forest & Waterdrop".

Here are the introduction and tutorials for visitors.

Artists

Fractist – LinChen

Fractist (LinChen) is a Chinese fractal artist with over ten years of experience. His works are the intersections of art and mathematics. In the past ten years, he has not only created a large number of excellent works, but also founded the Fractal Art Website, dedicated to promoting fractal art in China.

Fractal art is a form of algorithmic art created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still digital images, animations, and media. Fractal art developed from the mid-1980s onwards. It is a genre of computer art and digital art which are part of new media art. The mathematical beauty of fractals lies at the intersection of generative art and computer art. They combine to produce a type of abstract art.

His works in this exhibition are the imagination of alien creatures and environments based on the setting of Dark Forest.

Yuqian Sun

Yuqian Sun is a Chinese AI artist and researcher who graduated from Tsinghua University and Goldsmiths. She's currently a doctoral student at the Royal College of Art, and an art consultant of rct.ai. She’s also an artist on SuperRare.

Inspired by conversations between virtual characters in video games, she produces works that steer with curiosity. Her main art projects focused on AI chatbots, which explore the narrative and intimacy in human-AI interaction.

Her works and research have been presented at galleries and conferences including 2020 Artificial Life, The media facade of Yeltsin Center, ACM Celebration of Women in Computing, ISEA 2022, BBA Gallery Berlin, Shanghai Aiiiii Art Center and New York Times Square.

Her work in this exhibition, also included in "The Three-body Problem art illustration Book", depicts the "Staircase project" from the science fiction novel "The Three Body Problem": In order to obtain information, the PIA initially plans to launch a probe directly at the Three Body fleet. For the purpose of reducing weight, Thomas Wade suggested instead to deliver only a human brain, which would be instantly frozen to extremely low temperatures by using liquid nitrogen. Although humans could not yet be thawed intact, they believed that the Three Body civilization were already in possession of this technology and could also clone another body. So, after layers of selection, Yun Tianming finally became the best candidate for this project.

This work also pays tribute to Michelangelo's 'Pieta'.

Community Science Fiction Art Co-creation Event

In this exhibition, we have planned a science fiction community co-creation event.

First, we invited four young Chinese science fiction writers who have a positive attitude towards Web3 to write four paragraphs about science fiction scenes around the theme of dark forest and waterdrop.

Then, we organized a generative art flash mob contest. During those three days, anyone can refer to the AI generated art tutorials we provided and create their own work based on words written by the four science fiction writers.

Finally, our curators select the parts of the community submissions that are thematically distinct and aesthetically pleasing to art as the exhibited works.
